Our participation in

Florida State Thespian Festival

Troupe 0955 attended the 2009 Florida Thespian State Festival from April 21 to April 26 2009 and begun to assume our new duties. In addition to supporting our troupe's competitors (Spencer in Pantomime, Solo Musical Theatre, Monologue, and Scholarship; and Alexandra in Playwriting) we took on several responsibilities. We were responsible for planning and helping to run the One Act Festival, organizing and stage, managing the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and managing the events held in the Tampa Theatre. We were busy.

Although it was Mr. Tempest the state sponsors voted for as the next State Director, it was Deerfield Beach High School Drama that was elected to run the festival! Everyone who participated did a stellar job.

We look ahead to the 2010 Florida State Festival. We hope this year's plays at Bucks' Theatre will result in state worthy performances and competitions. And, as Mr. Tempest fulfills his post of Florida Thespian State Director Elect and Adam Dornford fulfills his as Florida Thespian State Student Representative Elect, they will, in participation with the Deerfield Beach HS Drama club, continue to assume more responsibilities. The festival will close with Mr. Tempest and Adam Dornford in their new leadership positions, fostering the great success that is Florida Thespian.

Press Release from EdTA.

Florida will have a new chapter director starting in 2010. C. LeRoy “Lee” Tempest, of Deerfield Beach High School, was elected by Florida EdTA members to succeed longtime chapter director Michael Higgins of Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in Jacksonville.

Tempest, who has spent twenty-five years at Deerfield Beach, served as the head of the school’s English department, faculty chair, and graduation coordinator. He also served as co-chair of District VII and on its board.

“I’m thrilled to be given the opportunity to serve Florida’s troupe directors as the next chapter director,” said Tempest. “I hope to build on the wonderful foundation that Michael Higgins has created and make contributions to move our organization forward into the next decade.”

“Florida Thespians is our organization’s largest and most active chapter, which is in no small part due to the tireless work and strong leadership of Michael Higgins,” EdTA Executive Director Michael J. Peitz commented. “We are excited for Florida to continue their tradition of excellence with Lee Tempest at the helm and look forward to a smooth and successful transition of leadership over the next eighteen months.”

Tempest’s term begins May 1, 2010 and runs through July 31, 2011.

Mr. Tempest is the State Director Elect

As part of his preparation, Mr. Tempest has been traveling around the state attending other District Festivals.
